MILAN, Italy -- New Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri kicked off his time in charge with a victory as his team won 1-0 at Chievo Verona in the Serie A opener on Saturday. Roma, last years runner-up, won 2-0 at home to Fiorentina, with Radja Nainggolan and Gervinho scoring. Juventus showed that little has changed from the spirit which drove it to three consecutive league titles as Martin Caceres helped open the scoring in the sixth minute. Caceres headed Carlos Tevezs corner toward goal, although it eventually went in off the back of Cristiano Biraghi. Juventus had several chances to extend its advantage and hit the woodwork three times in the first half. "There are good signs, Im happy enough," Allegri said. "But there is a lot to improve. I was more worried than angry at the end. We should have closed the match and instead we risked them equalizing." Roma got off to a record Serie A start of 10 straight wins last season, before faltering as the campaign wore on. It once again looks set to push Juventus all the way. "Were strong and were not going to hide it," Roma midfielder Daniele De Rossi said. "This year for the first time I say that we can aim for the title. But aiming for it is different to making it seem very easy." Allegri was hired by Juventus last month, replacing Antonio Conte, who resigned -- and later became Italy coach. For his first competitive match in charge Allegri was without the injured Andrea Pirlo, Alvaro Morata and Andrea Barzagli while Giorgio Chiellini was suspended. Fernando Llorente and Sebastian Giovinco had been suffering from flu and were only fit for the bench, which meant that Kingsley Coman started and the 18-year-old impressed on his debut. Juventus began brightly and Tevez, who had been left far too much space inside the penalty area, drilled narrowly wide of the left post inside the opening minute. After taking an early lead it had several chances to double its advantage but Claudio Marchisio lifted Paul Pogbas deft pass over the bar. Vidal, who had been the subject of intense transfer speculation in the off-season, had an effort cleared off the line before then heading the resulting corner off the right post. "It was important for us to win today, we have a long season ahead and need to be ready to battle every weekend," Allegri said. "Now we have the international break to hopefully get at least one of so many absentees back." Chievo was struggling and its best opportunity came in the 25th minute as Valter Birsa raced down the left flank before centring for Ezequiel Schelotto, whose effort flew well wide of the left post. Juventus hit the woodwork again shortly before halftime when Tevez fired Stephan Lichtsteiners cross off the bar. From the resulting corner, Caceres also hit the bar. Coman almost capped a brilliant performance with a goal seconds after halftime, but his curled effort from just outside the penalty area scraped the outside of the right post. Juventus was nearly made to rue its wasted opportunities when goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon was forced into a fantastic save at point-blank range to deny Maxi Lopez. In the capital, Roma was also struggling with injuries so Kostas Manolas -- who only joined last week -- was thrown straight into the back four along with fellow new signings Ashley Cole and Davide Astori. The attacking pace of Gervinho and Juan Manuel Iturbe caused Fiorentina no end of problems. Roma took the lead in a move started and finished by Nainggolan. He threaded the ball through to Gervinho and was on hand to smash the rebound into the bottom right corner after his teammates effort had been parried by Fiorentina goalkeeper Norberto Neto. Fiorentina coach Vincenzo Montella responded by immediately taking off Australia international Joshua Brillante, who had given the ball away in the buildup. Gervinho should have extended Romas lead early in the second half following a swift counterattack but, after a fantastic run, the Ivory Coast striker saw his shot smothered when he might have done better to square it to unmarked teammate Miralem Pjanic. Moments later Gervinho also had an effort blocked by Neto. Roma goalkeeper Morgan De Sanctis had had little to do all match but kept his team in the lead shortly after the hour mark when he tipped Josip Ilicics free kick onto the crossbar before pulling off another great save to deny Khouma Babacar. Gervinho sealed the result in stoppage time, beating the offside trap to race onto Nainggolans through ball, before rounding Neto and firing across into the back of the net. Joe Gilliam Jersey . Heres what else the Brooklyn Nets are at the moment: a last-place disappointment. "Tough times right now," forward Kevin Garnett said. They got tougher Sunday, when reserve Rodney Stuckey scored a season-high 27 points in the Detroit Pistons 109-97 victory that sent the Nets to a fifth straight loss and sole possession of the Atlantic Division basement. The Nets, with their enormous payroll and enormous expectations, fell to 3-10, a half-game behind the New York Knicks, and were hearing boos at Barclays Center in the second half. "The balls just bouncing the opponents way right now and weve just got to stay together," coach Jason Kidd said. Greg Monroe had 18 points and 11 rebounds for the Pistons, who bounced back from consecutive losses to Atlanta. Brandon Jennings added 14 points and 10 assists, making all 10 free throws to make up for a 2-for-10 shooting performance. "Road wins are hard to get and any time you get a road win its huge," Pistons coach Maurice Cheeks said. Joe Johnson made eight 3-pointers and scored a season-high 34 points, but the short-handed Nets couldnt overcome another cold night from Paul Pierce and Garnett, who were a combined 7 for 22. Pierce finished with 19 points, but was 5 of 13 after making his last two when the game was long since decided. Garnett shot 2 of 9 for four points. The Nets again played without starters Brook Lopez and Deron Williams, who have sprained left ankles, and top reserves Andrei Kirilenko (back spasms) and Jason Terry (bruised left knee). "Its tough when look at the record, 3-10, 3-11, whatever our record is, and know weve dug ourselves quite a big hole, no matter if weve got the injuries or not," Pierce said. "We still feel like were talented enough to win these type of games." They played a strong first half but were undone again by a miserable third quarter, as they have in all 10 losses. The Nets had been outscored by 77 points (8.6 per game) in the third quarters of their first nine losses and thhey were even worse in this one, getting clobbered 34-15.dddddddddddd "We have to be worst team in the league when it comes to third quarters and thats not acceptable," Garnett said. Leading by seven at halftime, Brooklyn needed less than 4 minutes to fall behind by four after Detroit came out of the locker room with a 15-4 spurt. Then, leading by one midway through the period, the Pistons outscored the Nets 17-6 to close the quarter and take a 78-66 advantage to the fourth. Stuckey kept the Nets at bay from there, scoring 17 in the fourth. He came in leading all Eastern Conference reserves with 14.8 points per game and helped the Pistons overcome 4-for-20 shooting from starting guards Jennings and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope. "Im just trying to come in and just be that energy guy that we need off the bench," Stuckey said. "Just bring energy and whatever my teammates need me to do. They rely on me to score some baskets. Thats what Ive got to do." Meanwhile, the team with the payroll of around $180 million after luxury taxes went with the likes of Mason Plumlee and Mirza Teletovic for much of the fourth quarter before Kidd finally went back to Pierce and Garnett with about 4 minutes left. Brooklyn cut a 16-point deficit to 96-91 after consecutive 3-pointers by Johnson, but Stuckey banked in a jumper, and Monroe followed Johnsons free throw with a dunk to push the lead to 100-92 with 2:18 to play. Nets players made the first four baskets, though the last of those counted for the Pistons when Andray Blatche tipped it into his own hoop. Detroit led 23-19 after one quarter. But Johnson hit all five shots and scored 13 points in the second, when Brooklyn made 13 of 17 (76.5 per cent). A 3-pointer from Pierce and two from Johnson led the Nets on a 16-5 surge that turned a one-point deficit into a 51-41 lead. NOTES: Detroits Andre Drummond finished with nine points and 10 rebounds, ending his streak of seven straight double-doubles. He was 1 of 4 after the Nets resorted to intentionally fouling him in the fourth quarter. ... Garnett tied Hall of Famer Gary Payton for ninth on the NBAs career list with his 1,335th game.
