Cincinnati Reds first baseman Joey Votto will receive the James "Tip" ONeill Award prior to Wednesdays game against the Pittsburgh Pirates at The Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati. The award is presented annually by the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame to the player judged to have excelled in individual achievement and team contribution while adhering to baseballs highest ideals. "Joey Votto is not only a superstar on the field, but hes also an inspiration and a difference-maker away from the ballpark," said Scott Crawford, the Halls director of operations. "There was a very strong field of candidates for this award, but Joey deserves this honour for his tremendous contributions both on and off the field." The Etobicoke, Ontario native, who was selected to his fourth consecutive All-Star Game in 2013, hit over .300 for the fifth straight season and set new Canadian single-season records for walks (135) and times on base (316). Hitting 24 home runs, he finished sixth in the National League MVP voting and topped Canadians in every offensive category except for doubles, RBI and stolen bases. Off the field, Votto launched the Joey Votto Foundation, which helps military veterans and active service members in Cincinnati and Toronto deal with post-traumatic stress disorder. His goal is to offer care to approximately 500 new patients each year. "Its an honour to be recognized again by the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame," Votto said. "It is very flattering to be mentioned in any discussion that includes Larry Walker, who represented our country with such dedication and professionalism during his Major League career. I have to thank the Baseball Hall of Fame for its efforts in promoting our great game in Canada." Votto becomes the first player to win the award four years in a row and the second player to win it more than three times, joining Maple Ridge, B.C., native Larry Walker, who won the award nine times. PAUL, Minn.WASHINGTON - Wizards coach Randy Wittman signed a contract extension Tuesday after leading the team to the playoffs for the first time since 2008. With its young backcourt of John Wall and Bradley Beal, Washington beat the Chicago Bulls in the first round before losing to the Indiana Pacers in the Eastern Conference semifinals. The Wizards hadnt won a post-season series since 2005. Wittman was promoted to head coach when Flip Saunders was fired in January 2012, the third rebuilding project Wittman has undertaken. He has the worst regular-season record of anyone who has coached at least 400 NBA games — 191-329, a .367 winning percentage — since the league started in 1946. Wittman, in the final year of his contract, operated under a playoff-or-else edict from owner Ted Leonsis this season. "Its really the players who made the big decision, not only in the exit interviews the last couple of years and this off-season, but the way they responnded to him on the court," Leonsis said on the teams website.dddddddddddd "They respect their coach, they listen and like playing for him, and it shows." This season, Washington went 44-38, a 15-win improvement from a year ago, to finish fifth in a weak Eastern Conference. "This team and this organization have made significant strides over the last 2 1/2 seasons and Im excited to be a part of the next step in that process," Wittman said in a news release issued by the club. Wittman was scheduled to meet with reporters Wednesday. A day after being eliminated by the Pacers last month, Wizards players were full of praise for Wittman, appreciative of his tough-love tactics, his teaching methods and his game-day preparation. "He gets as much credit as the players," veteran forward Al Harrington said then. "I would really be upset if hes not the coach leading this team out of that locker room next year." ' ' '
